The Hong Kong SAR Regional Flag

1. Large Outdoor Events / Stage Backdrops

  • Recommended Sizes: No. 1 (288 × 192 cm) or No. 2 (240 × 160 cm)

  • Applicable Scenarios: Large outdoor ceremonies, sports meets, or centered as a backdrop on a massive stage.

  • Setup Tips: These two sizes are exceptionally large and must be paired with tall outdoor flagpoles of 7 to 9 meters or more, or mounted flat and secured directly onto a large backdrop wall. If hanging them on an indoor stage, pay close attention to the ceiling height to prevent the flags from dragging on the floor.

2. Medium Indoor Venues / Lecture Halls / Office Lobbies

  • Recommended Sizes: No. 3 (192 × 128 cm) or No. 4 (144 × 96 cm)

  • Applicable Scenarios: School auditoriums, hotel ballrooms, medium conference rooms, or floor-standing flagpoles on both sides of the main stage.

  • Setup Tips: Sizes 3 and 4 are the most popular “all-rounder” sizes for indoor events. They pair perfectly with indoor stainless steel stage flagpoles (with bases) measuring 2.5 to 3 meters in height. When officiating guests stand next to them, the height and proportions look most balanced, yielding the best photo results.

3. Small Meeting Rooms / Signing Ceremony Backdrops / Wall Decor

  • Recommended Size: No. 5 (96 × 64 cm)

  • Applicable Scenarios: Small press conferences, decorative accents on both sides of a backdrop panel, or wall-mounted displays.

  • Setup Tips: The size is moderate and will not overwhelm the space, making it ideal for relatively compact indoor environments.

4. Guest Seating / Press Area / Signing Tables

  • Recommended Sizes: No. 6 (60 × 40 cm) or Car/Desktop Flag (30 × 20 cm)

  • Applicable Scenarios: Rostrums/podiums, signing tables, or VIP lounge coffee tables.

  • Setup Tips: The No. 6 flag is commonly used to decorate the front of larger speaker podiums, whereas the 30 × 20 cm desktop flag is the absolute standard protocol size placed in the center of the table for bilateral or inter-regional signing ceremonies.

💡 Extra Tips for Event Setup:

  • Displaying the National Flag and Regional Flag Together: If your event requires displaying both the Chinese National Flag and the Hong Kong Regional Flag, you must strictly adhere to the following legal regulations:

    • Size Contrast: The National Flag must be larger than the Regional Flag. The standard practice is to use a National Flag that is one size larger than the Regional Flag (e.g., using a No. 2 National Flag paired with a No. 3 Regional Flag).

    • Positioning: When the two flags are displayed side-by-side facing the audience, the National Flag goes on the left and the Regional Flag goes on the right from the audience’s perspective (from the stage’s perspective facing out, the National Flag is on the right and the Regional Flag is on the left). If they are raised on parallel flagpoles, the National Flag must be raised first, lowered last, and flown at a higher position than the Regional Flag.

  • Material Selection: For outdoor setups, knitted polyester is highly recommended for its wind resistance and durability. For indoor main stages, opt for double-sided satin fabric (which has a subtle sheen); it looks much more prestigious and formal under camera flashes and stage lighting.
